Inlays or onlays are an optimal solution for when a tooth has moderate damage that needs more than a filling, but not enough to require a crown.
Repair & Restore Your Teeth
Also known as indirect fillings, inlays are small, custom-made dental restorations that replace missing tooth material. They are stronger than composite filling and appropriate for larger cavities. An inlay, however, does not cover the tip of a tooth.
An onlay is also known as a partial dental crown, and is larger than an inlay. It covers all or part of the cusp and adds strength to the treated tooth. It is used when the tooth has more damage than an inlay can fix, but doesn’t need a full crown.
Your dentist will begin by numbing the area to ensure a comfortable procedure. Next, decay is removed from the damaged tooth. Unlike a dental crown, inlays and onlays do not require any further tooth preparation. A digital impression is taken and unlike other practices, we create your inlays and outlays right here in our office using E4D CAD/CAM technology. The restoration is carved by our E4D machine, and then fit and cemented in place.
