Gum Disease

Helping Your Achieve Healthy Gums

Periodontal disease, also called gum disease, is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults. It has also been linked to serious health problems such as heart disease, kidney problems, stomach problems, diabetes, stroke, and premature childbirth. Yet it is treatable, and often preventable.

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. It starts with bacteria and other harmful microorganisms that colonize in the plaque and tartar around your teeth. The infection begins at the gum line and gradually spreads causing the gums to pull loose from the tooth creating deep pockets, which collect even more plaque and tartar. Without treatment, the infection can reach the bone and cause further damage and tooth loss.

How Do You Know You Have Gum Disease?

Most people don’t know they have gum disease, and don’t seek treatment until they are in the advanced stages. Check for these following symptoms:

  • Pus around the teeth
  • Gum tenderness
  • Separation of gums from teeth
  • Bleeding gums from brushing teeth
  • Tooth loss
  • Gum recession

Treatments for Gum Disease

Gum disease can be prevented with good oral hygiene and regular dental visits. Some people are, however, more susceptible to the condition due to genetics, medication or certain health conditions.

We strive to provide effective, conservative and non-surgical solutions for dental problems like gum disease. Using a gentle in-office procedure, called scaling, we remove the accumulation of tartar from the surface of the tooth root, below the gum line. This is followed by a procedure called planing. It smooths and polishes the tooth root, making it more difficult for plaque or tartar to accumulate.

At Aesthetic Smile Design, we work closely with you to prevent gum disease and provide solutions for it when it does occur. Think of us as your partner in your dental health.
