Are you unhappy with the appearance of your smile? If so, you may be interested in porcelain veneers. They are among the most versatile cosmetic restorations available, and they require very little alteration to your natural tooth structure. Although veneers are not the right solution for every situation, they can correct a wide variety of esthetic concerns for those who are good candidates.
What veneers can accomplish
A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain, adhered to the visible surface of a tooth. Traditional veneers are about the thickness of a fingernail, and require a small amount of enamel to be shaved off in preparation. No-prep or low-prep veneers, such as the well-known Lumineers, are much thinner. Little to no enamel is removed.
Veneers may be a good solution for:
- Permanently stained teeth
- Misshapen teeth
- Poorly spaced teeth
- Teeth that are too large or too small and much more.
Are they right for you?
Veneers are often promoted as the cure-all for an unattractive smile. However, oral health is complex and no single treatment is ideal for every person. In some cases, veneers are absolutely wonderful. In other situations, they are not a good option. The only way to determine if you are a candidate, and what results can be accomplished, is to come in for a consultation.
There are many factors to consider, most importantly your oral health. Decay, gum disease, and similar problems need to be addressed prior to cosmetic work. Additionally, it is important to understand that veneers are intended for cosmetic improvement of healthy teeth. If your teeth are decayed, fractured, weak, or otherwise compromised, the problem is beyond cosmetic. Dental crowns accomplish the same cosmetic improvement as veneers, along with restoring the health and functionality of the tooth. Other factors such as your habits, health concerns, and bite alignment are also considered. We will not recommend any procedure, including porcelain veneers, unless we truly believe that it will be a successful, effective, long-lasting solution for your unique situation.
